Mission Possible: Blackberry + SharePoint

Categories: SharePoint, Technology
I was perusing questions from Linkedin yesterday and Moshe Weiss posted the following question:

It got me thinking since I have a blackberry and I do use it with SharePoint. I replied to his question and here's my response ...

Great question Moshe! Here are 5 ways you can leverage SharePoint with Blackberry:

  1. Access mobile-enabled SP sites. By default, every SP site comes with an optimized mobile version. Just add the /m to the address. For example: http://spcafe.sharepointcafe.com/m/

Here are more details from Martin Kearn.

  2. E-mail enable SP Lists.  By doing this, just by sending an e-mail from a Blackberry, you can send documents directly and archive e-mail communications to a SP document library.

Here are more details from Joel Oleson.

  3. Synchronize SP calendars and contacts with Microsoft Outlook. I would assume that you synchronize Outlook with your Blackberry.

Here are more details from Todd Klindt.

  4. Create, edit and store Office documents. Third-party office productivity tools like what DataViz offers for the Blackberry can be used to create and edit Office socuments and then store it in a SP document library and still maintain version history.

  5. Display a custom mobile dashboard. Custom web part pages can be created in SP to aggregate various high-level data from various information sources to a single repository and be accessed from a Blackberry device.

Any other ideas?

Interesting links and resources - all for WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007. Another one was the BerryPoint project, although I believe it is no longer being developed. The bigger issue is that since most BB users are outside the corporate firewall, it would mean have MOSS Internet Server, or some sort of VPN tunnel from your Blackberry to your Intranet in order to get to those WSS sites. My faves are #2, 3 and 5.

Hi, Robin - Great point. Unless the SharePoint infrastructure is accessible by the BB, then none of these benefits can be taken advantage of.

Great article Robin. If I may, there are two other options for the BlackBerry, which I don't think were available when you first wrote this post. The first is WICKSoft Mobile Documents, which contains a BlackBerry specific SharePoint interface. It lets you access all of your lists, view any document, upload and download content (so you can use it with DataViz), and will let you synch things like contacts between the phone and SharePoint. If you've given the /m SharePoint a shot, and found it didn't quite do it for you, definately check out WICKSoft. There are plenty of flash demos on our site. It does require a backend middleware component though, so you'll need to get IT involved in the setup and deployment. If the /m option is good enough for you, WICKSoft offers another solution that can further simplify your BlackBerry SharePoint experience; WICKSoft LinkWorks. LinkWorks is especially useful for people who get automated messages from SharePoint, like the kind that are generated by workflow. Typically the links in these message won't open on the BlackBerry because of the way the links are formatted. LinkWorks fixes this, so that you can now open the link in the BlackBerry browser. It's $5 a copy, and is a simple download from Mobihand, or any of the popular BlackBerry sites. - Will from WICKSoft
